Melvin, and B- Griffiths) was adjudged the best team and; Mr Melvin the bestyspeaker. The Mayor .of Wellington (Mr G: A. Ttbnp) presided, and the Judges were Mr J. A. Young, M-P., Canon Percival James, and Mr M. F. O’Leary. ■ The subject of the debate war “That Labour. Government has been beneficial in the various parts of the Empire where it. has operated/’ Each speaker was allowed 15 minutes. , In the first , debate the affirmative' was supported. )>y Canterbury University College,'' represented by Mr C. S. Perry and Miss 0. WcstWataon, and the negative by Otago .University, represented by Mr E. S. Bussell and. Mr ,E. 8. Tuckwcll. In the second debate the affirmative was taken by Victoria University College, for whhi Miss C. S. Forde and Mr A. E. Hurley spoke, and the negative by Auckland University ’ College, which was represented by Mr'K. Melvin and Mr R. Griffiths. The’opinion of the judges was conveyed to the audience by Mr J. A. loungi M.P., who said that their decision in awarding first place to Auckland as a team and to Mr Melvin as a speaker was unanimous.
