AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE. The monthly meeting of the Otago Centre, New. Zealand - Amateur Athletic Association, was held last evening in the Y.M.C.A. buildings. Mr E. L, Macaney presided, and. there was a Targe attendance of delegates from the affiliated clubs. The chairman conveyed the congratulations of the centre to the Caveraham Harrier Club on winning the Rennet Cup at Christchurch, and the Civil Service Club on winning the teams’ i-ace in the Temuka-Timaru road race. The Invercargill Amateur Athletic Club advised that it had been decided to hold a cycle road race on August 30, from Gore to Invercargill, a distance of 40 miles.. It was understood that at least 20 Dunedin cyclists Would compete in the race.' It was hoped to make the race an annual event. The club proposed to give trophies to the first, second, third, and fourth placed riders, and also trophies to the competitors registering the fastest times (junior and senior). —The Invercargill Club was granted permission to hold the race. A letter was received from Mr A. regarding J. G- Deckle's application for the' recognition of his throw as the best performance by a New Zealander in hammer throwing. 'The writer stated that no certificate had . been received to the effect that the steel tape used was according to standard measure, and no Certificate that the circle used was in accordance with the association's rules..—lt was derided- to communicate with the Tokomairiro Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club with a request that the certificates be completed and forwarded to the centre without delay. It was announced that ; the junior cross-country championship would be held on Saturday afternoon. The course will be from the Scout Hall (St. Hilda) to Ocean View House (towards St. Clair), ,then along Lover’s lane'to the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery -gates. From there it will return along Tahuna road, past Tahuna Park, and finish at Onslow House. The following officials will control the race;—-Starter, Mr A Burk; - timekeepers—Messrs W. Matthews, H. A. Hogg, J, B. Nelson, and T. P. Williamson; judges—Messrs C. W. Clark, E. L. Macassey, C. K- Heaton, H. T. Emmerson, J. A. Bond, and J. Beatson; course stewards—Messrs K. Thompson, A. T. MTndoe, J. Hoy, and J.’ Wabnsley; superintendent, Mr P. W. Breen.

The Wellington Centre advised that the New Zealand Cross-country Championship Race would be held at Hutt Park (Petone) on August 30. Messrs C. W. Clark, J. Seatson, and R. Thompson were appointed , selectors and trainers of the Otago team to compete in the New Zealand Cross-country Championship Race-to be held at Wellington on August SO. The course for the Otago Cross-country Championship, to be held on August 16, was outlined by Mr C. W. Clark. He said the race would start on the Wingatni racecourse,' opposite the grand stand. The competitors would proceed as far os the second sod wall, then through a fence and on to a short stretch of road before crossing a gate into Mr M‘Pherson’s property. The runners would then turn to the right and proceed to the top of a paddock at the edge of the ploughed land, and then along a stretch of ploughed land at the head of Janefield road. - From here they would proceed down Janefield road and through Mr Cow's property, and over a ploughed paddock to the course. The course would be covered twice. ”

It was decided to ask the affiliated dubs to contribute £5 towards the expenses of the men selected from the respective dubs for the team to represent Otago in the New Zealand Cross-country Championship. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association forwarded a cheque for fU 6s 11<L This represented the Otago Centre's portion of the refunds in connection with the tour of Messrs Lermond and Golding. The refund of the guarantee amounted to £25, and the profit due to the centre amounted to £5 14s 2d.

The New Zealand Council advised that a sub-committee had been appointed to report to the council on the question of inviting American, Canadian, South Australian, or- Australian athletes to visit New Zealand. The sub-committee had also been instructed to report on the question -of finance in connection with the proposed tour. The Pacific Club was granted permission to hold sports meetings on Angnst 30, September 13, September 20, and September 27. The, Hanover Baptist Harrier Club was granted permission to hold meetings on July 26 and August 2
