POSITION IN SAMOA
THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL NOMINATED NATIVE MEMBERS. (Special to Press Association.) (By Radio.) APIA, June 25, _ At a meeting of the Legislative Council yesterday the Administrator, in welcoming the nominated native members Malietoa and Mataafa, said the occasion was an historic one in the life of Samoa, as it was the first time that Samoans had sat in the Council.
, The Administrator’s remarks were endorsed by all the councillors. One new Bill, which facilitates court work in the collection of personal taxes, was passed. Mr Patrick Buckley Fitzherbert, who had been in practice as a barrister in Western Samoa, and who had his license cancelled by the Administrator, leaves by the Tofua on Saturday for Auckland. On June 23 a European constable was attacked and seriously injured by Samoans at Papa, a lonely, isolated village on the south coast- of Savaii. The constable, who was alone and armed, but did not use his arms, is now in the Apia Hospital after a long sea voyage. A police party is dealing with the situation.
