LOGAN PARK.

USE OF UNIVERSITY GROUND. RUGBY UNION AGREES TO TERMS. At the monthly meeting of the Otago* University Council yesterday the Special Committee which had been set up to interview the Otago Rugby Football Union with reference to Logan Park (Drs Marshall Macdonald and Fitzgerald,' representing the council, and Messrs Cabot and Stallworthy, representing the Students’ Association) reported that it had gone as a deputation to the Rugby Union, and had discussed the terms upon which the union should be permitted to make use of Logan Park for football matches .during the present season. The deputation had asked for payment of £4OO, the Rugby Union to pay 25 per cent. o£ the gate to the corporation; and a further condition to be that the Univer-. sity A and' B teams should play all their marches on the University oval when not playing at Carisbrook or out of Dunedin; and, further, that all iriter-University matches should be played at the University oval.—The Rugby Union stated that this offer could not be accepted. On May 13 the Rugby Union wrote offering the sum of £6O for the two University playing areas up to September 30, 1930, plus 25 per cent, of the net gate takings, the net gate to be the gross gate less gatemen’s wages and amusement tax, the University Council to be allowed the use ot the ground on three days during the tenancy. The Rugby Union Competitions Committee to be the judges whether the grounds were fit to play on or not in cases of bad weather. _ The committee met on May 16 to consider these terms, and resolved to recommend that the Rugby Union, be allowed to use the playing areas during the coming winter on the following terms:—-(1; The Rugby Union to pay the council the sum of £6O, plus 35 per cent, of the gross takings. (2) The University to have the right to use the ground on three Saturdays on giving 10 days’ notice. (3) The tenancy to be for Saturdays only until September 30, 1030. (4) The playing areas in question to be those in front of the grand stand. (5) The Rugby Union: to make its own arrangements with the Hockey Association as to admission of players’ and public. It was further recommended that the Rugby Union should be informed that £6C was an exceedingly small sum which did not reimburse the .University for the expense to which it had been put in the erection of the grand stand, payment of caretaker and payment of 'fuel, and that it was only the University’s desire to' assist football that led to the acceptance of the offer; also that the union should be informed that the University was required to pay 25 per cent, of the. gross takings to the City Corporation. The committee also considered a letter from the Hockey Association asking for the use of a ground. It was resolved to recommend that one ground behind the grand stand be allotted the Hockey Association for a payment of £5, plus ££2 10s for the use of the grand stand; the association for a payment of £6, plus £2 10s ground on Saturday afternoons only; the University-to have the use off. the ground on three Saturdays if they so desired; the Hockey Association to make its own arrangements with the Rugby Union as to admission of players. The Rugby Union and "the Ladies’ Hockey Association had agreed to these proposals, but the Otago Hockey Association would not do so, and had decided to fr l nake other' arrangements. The report was adopted.
