NEW ZEALANDER FOUND DEAD

GAS POISONING. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) 1 LONDON, May 8. A New (Zealander named Eric W. Mollard Was found dead from gas poisoning at 55 Guilford street, Holbom, on May 2. An inquest was bfgun at the Holborn Town Hall on May 6, but at that time the police bad not-been able to identify the. man, and so it was-ad- 1 journed until May 23, In the meantime the police have come into possession ‘of a letter-which has solved the mystery. The letter, dated November 27, 1929, was , from a sister who was- at that time living at ‘ Panmure. West Tanjaki, Auckland province. -,lt was directed to an address in Durban, Natal, apd re-directed to a boarding house at 27 Brock road, Plaistow, East London. The landlord informed the police that Mollard had left the letter with him, saying that if any otber letters came from his sister should be returned to her. The contents of the letter showed that Mollard was despondent and discouraged when he wrote while in Durban to his sister. When Mollard was found at the address at Guilford street there ■ were no papers to identify him. His only possesions were 28& and- a suitcase with some clothes therein. He had hot signed the visitors’ book at the High Commissioner’s office, and ,it was not until his previous landlord produced the letter that his identity was decided. He will be buried next Tuesday at a place not yet decided upon, and an official of the High Commissioner’s Department will be present.' At the preliminary inquiry this week it was stated that an extract had been found in the room occupied by Mollard which read:— One day I pass and disappear.
