WEEKLY MEETING. The- weekly meeting of the committee of the Otago Rugby, Union was hold last m Sht. Xhc president (Mr H, Harris) occupied the chair. , It was decided to give the New Zealand team a reception at the City Hotel, ihe team will arrive in Dunedin from Oamaru by the first express on Thursday. Ihe members of the British team 'have been invited to attend the reception, \ ■, .It was notified that all referees in Otago were entitled to free admission to Cansbrook on the occasion of the test match on Saturday. The chair.tnan said that at the meet”}s of the committee the previous week M .r K - Procter, a member of the committee, had reported Carnegie, a Southern Unb player, for indiscriminate punching in the match against Pirates, The referee (Mr 6. Marston) and Carnegie attended the meeting, Mr Procter said that about halfway through the first spell a scrum had been formed; and he saw Carnegie standing un and pumchmg at an opponent. He could not say whether ■he connected with: the I irates player. The referee was standing on the side of the scrum, but whether he saw -the incident. Mr Procter said, he 9? u l? n llO * 1 s £ate. -® e was . quite- certain that Carnegie hit out on, two occasions. , • Mr/Marston said he did not remember such an incident taking place.. Carnegie, said he had nothing to say to . the charge. He had no recollection of anything like what was stated happening during the game. • h ■ Mr Marston ?aid he saw nothing to take exception to during the game Mr A. Haub said he had’ also seen Carnegie hit out twice, and on three other occasions as well. The punching took place out in the open, and anybody could have seen it.

Mr Marston said he had nothing to add to ins previous statement. The referee and the player then retired The chairman said the first thing the committee had to decide was whether it considered that the charge of indiscriminate punching had been proved. The committee unanimously agreed that charge Lad been proved. The chairman then said he would take a motion regarding the penalty which shoukkbe inflicted for the offence. Mr J. King moved that Carnegie’s name be placed on the * cautioned ” list. He explained that he was dealing with the olience just as it stood, and that he thought the penalty, in view of other decisions come to by the committee, would meet the case. , Mr Jolly seconded the motion. He said that there was no evidence that a Pirates man had beeu struck. •
The chairman said the committee might consider the difference between hittinn- out at an opponent and connection; with” the blow. Was their any difference? ~ ib' Nelson moved as an amendment that Carnegie b e suspended for two playing Saturdays. They had the definite evidence ot three.of their committeemen that Carnegie had struck at an opponent, and they should accept that evidence. ,r -‘d'tchcll seconded the amendment lUr btuart said he was satisfied that Mr on had' not seen, what had occurred, the amendment was carried by a mod' majority.
