FORTHCOMING MEETINGS.

RACING. June 18. 21.—Soutb Canterbury Meet* lug. June 20 21.—Hawke's Bay Meeting. Juno 25.—Egroont-Wanganui Hunt Club Meeting. * ~, , June 27. 28.—Napier! Park Meeting. June 28.—Ashburton . .County Meeting. July B.—Oamaru Meeting. . July 9, 10, 12.—Wellington Meeting.

RACING NEWS. By Sentinel. Nominations for the Ashburton winter meeting are ’due to-day. > Havering is already being mentioned in connection with the Winter Cup. An Aiistralian exchange states that Mr J- T- Lippiat, of Perth, is oh his way to New Zealand on the lookout for likely material to race in Western Australia. He had, the New Zealand-bred' Prince Paladin on lease, and won four races with him. ■ •*

E. Olsen, who met with a fatal accident when riding at Perth' on: Saturday, was for some time associated with C. Gieseler’a stable at Wingatui. He was regarded as a very promising young rider _ and general regret will, be felt at his untimely end. The; stock of Weathervane came into the limelight At Warwick Farm on Saturday. May 31. Observatory, a brown gelding out of Deamine, ran second in the First Division of the St. John’s Park Nursery Handicap.' 'One writer says: “ Observatory showed pace, and will improve.” .

The Paladin gelding-Satrap is.reported to be showing evsry indication of making good-as a hurdler.-

Gustavo, the three-year-old brother to Count Cavour, is reported to be developing in a very pleasing manner, and is regarded as likely to. make good in his second season.

. Red Heckle is again doing easy exer.cise, and F, Christmas is how handling a full br’other to the Warplane, gelding. The Leighton'gelding- Vandyke in J, H. Jefferd’a team is credited with plenty of pace, and is booked to tun at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. .. -Crown Area’s win at Randwick 'on Saturday. did not come out of its .turn. It at least proved that he is not-the abject failuresuggested -by some of, his form Crown Area' put up a good performance by carrying 9.12 over 'a mile in Imiu 38isec.

The death is reported from Southland of_ Mr Arthur Garrard,' who was a prominent figure in sporting circles. Mr Gerrard was in his day a successful amateur rider over fences.. and could hold .his own with the-'best of them in the saddle. <

II, a six-year-old gelding by St. Alwyne, who was purchased in Austriaia by Mr- C. Boyle, of .Wellington, is , due to make .’’ his '"appearance, at the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting. . He.finished third’with 9:3 in the October Hurdle Race, two ' miles, - at the' VIR.C.; meeting in 1928, and - later won the Oby Hurdle Race, two miles and a furlong, at Caulfield- with ,9.5. 'He is engaged in the Hawke’s-Bay Hurdles. , Steeplechases, but no hurdle races, figure on the programmes of America’s principal clubs. Entries for four steeplechases to be run during the month’s racing in August total 365. The richest steeple T chase of the lot is the Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap, of £3POO, . two and’a-half .miles.;,-.The fences at Saratoga are not really stiff, but are of the kind in which' fast jumping tells, and the pace is fast throughout all the steeplechases at that track. ■

Home Made, who won the valuable A;J.C. Steeplechase on. Saturday, was got by Thurnham from Housewife by Kenilworth—Busy Bee by Gozo—lndustry by Musket—Pearl Ash. 'He thus , belongs, to the same family as two Melbourne' Cup winners in Gauius and the Grafter. Comic Song belonged to the same family. The abuse of the complimentary ticket ■system is one which racing club's in view of -■- the' ■ financial stringency causing loss of revenue, must eurely-tackle in the near future, and the sooner the problem is faced .the better for all concerned. In past' years many clubs distributed free passes ad lib, hoping thereby to popularise their race' meetings. and hy aug- • mented totalisator. figures to rank amongst the progressive clubs of the -Dominion (states the .Taranaki News). But totali* sator turnover is of little use to-the clubs, provided, that the .amount handled one year is sufficient to provide stake money for the following year, for-totalisator re-' venue must go back to horse owners even-; ■tuglly'. ;. . consequence of thie almost' wholesale distribution of K complimentaries" there has grown up in our midst a huge ■ 'amy of eo-called sportsmen whOi simply demand free privileges, and are very hurt' if called upon to “ weigh out I at.themain gate. And the trouble is that -free tickets may be given to persons who have no earthly right .to them; in fact., to the class which is no use to any racing club.! If the free list was limited to en-; trance only the' matter would not be so absurd, but- these persona do!-not stop at that. ' Tickets for the members' stand, 1 luncheon and afternoon tea and refreshment tickets are, all claimed as their right. At the recent annual meeting of the Marton Jockey Club some very pertinent questions were asked ; concerning tickets, and the opinion was expressed that the club was altogether too generous, and that drastic curtailment of these privileges would have to be undertaken-. As the outcome a meeting of representatives of all racing clubs in the Wanganui district has been called to discuss the matter, and judging by the opinions, openly expressed by prominent members of several clubs concerned, the proposals; to tighen up on the privilege question are likely to he unanimously supported. Hae ing folk with experience’of Australian, conditions know that the . free list does not exist there, ’ ■ TROTTING. By Sentinel,' . _ reported that the Auckland trainer J. Shaw, may transfer, to Christchurch. The Shrew terminated her racing when she ran at-, Ashburton last week, and now goes to the stud. One good move frequently leads to another.. The success achieved hy the Forbury Park Trotting Club has led to a similar move in Christchurch. The imported colt Llewellyn ■.has been recommissioned.- Much was expected from him when he came out in the spring of the season.. but he required more experience to carry his speed. The crack pacer Great Bingen, who has been definitely retired from the track, would have been a- two-minute horse on the mile circuits in America. Bertha Bell, the dam of Great ' Bingen, Peter Bingen and others greatly enriched the New Zealand Trotting Stud -Book, and the line looks sure to become one of the best ever imported to the country. In producing Wraokler and Arethuea the imported mare Trix Pointer is proving as valuable at the stud as she was on the track, Trix Pointer can supply her progeny with a good speed inheritance as she was got by Demonic from Bally Pointer by Star Pointer 1.591. Mr W J. Morland can generally be relied upon to develop a winner or two during the course -of, the season, and has unearthed another in the three-year-old Gold Country, who was got by Key de Oro from Country Belle, the dam of Conn tryman and Escapade. For a long time the Auckland Trotting Club committee has had mapped out a big scheme of improvements, which included among other items the installation of an electric totalisator and the hying down of a cinder track to enable trainers to work their horses without interruption throughout the year.- The first definite step towards the forming of the cinder track has been taken, when lorries recently began dumping cinders in a heap just outside the Campbell road entrance to Alexandra Park. _ Some thousands of yards of material will be required, as it is proposed to make the cinder track 20 feet wide, the. portion to be taken from the outside of the present dirt track. Considerable excavating work will be necessary, as it is intended to give the new track a solid bedding before placing the cinders on top.

NOTES FROM ADDINGTON. (Special to Dailt Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. It is stated locally that J. S. Shaw is likely to set up as a public trainer in Canterbury, making Addington his headquarters. Shaw has trained a number of really good horses that have competed with success on southern courses, the, best being Jewel Pointer.- Native Prince and Carmel were amongst a number of other good ones that he raced with success. ■ Mac Dillon, a brilliant performer, who has not raced with the best of luck, is in the private sale list. A. Hendricksen has a useful team engaged at the Auckland meeting, including Cardinal Logan, Neeoro and Denver City. All of them are capable of winning races.

Linkman was not a starter in the, big race at Ashburton on Saturday, but it,is more than likely that he will contest the Mark Memorial Handicap at Auckland. Linkman has shown indications of returning to his best form, in which case he must be regarded as a possibility. On 4.28 he is nicely treated. Red Shadow, who made rather a poor showing in the Sapling Stakes on Saturday, is a well-grown colt, but he had been in training for a good time, and had probably gone a bit stale before the two-year-old race. He paced well over the early part, but over the last half-mile he did not look a likely winner. Christchurch horses likely to make the trip to Auckland winter meeting include Neeoro, Denver City, and Cardinal Logan from A. Hendriksen's stable; Car-
