MR SHAYLE .GARDNER’S. IMPRESSIONS. (From 6ce Owrr Correspondent.) ’ , LONDON, May 8. Mr Shayle Gardner has returned to London for a short stay. During the course of a conversation with the film correspondent of the Evening News the New Zealand actor remarked: “ Tragedy lurks round every corner in Hollywood. The amount of uuem ploymeht is terrible. Not more than one in 20 among the film colony has regular work. The others do any sort of menial job to £eep alive. They become, waiters *atad waitresses, chauffeurs - anything that will keep them near oj in the studios. “ They exist from day to day in the hope that some director will notice them or that some emergency will arise, which will give them the magic chance., Many! of them, I am sorry tp say, are Englishmen.. The advent of the talkies led tir a rush to Hollywood of people who can speak good English. They beg and borrow a'nd live from hand to mouth. “ The; unemployment is due to the talkies. They take only four weeks or so to make, as against the two or three months.required for. a silent film.” The purpose of Mr return to London ia that he riiay renew his permit to’work-in : America. The Evening News adds: “ Since his remarkable sue- , cess as the father in the Rex Ingram’ film, ‘The Three Passions,’ he has been' - acting in American talkies, including ‘The Three’Live Ghosts,' ‘Disraeli,’With 1 George Arlisa, and the latest Dr Fu Manchu film with Warner ,Gland. He. la returning to Hollywood as soon as his 1 immigration permit is arranged.
