CITY POLICE COURT.

Monday, Juke 10. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) ANOTHER CHANCE. Arthur, Gordon Ivan Smart appeared for sentence on a charge of having behaved in a disorderly manner in a public place.-ryAfter perusing a report by the probation officer, his Worship said that he_would treat the defendant as he would a juvenile, and would, adjourn the matter for 12 months, conditional on the defendant s good behaviour during that period. MAINTENANCE. Alexander Anderson failed to appear to answer a. charge of disobedience of a maintenance order, on which the arrears to. May 16 last were £8 15s.—The defendant was sentenced to one month’s imbe released on payment of James Daniel, MTlroy -was charged with disobedience of; a maintenance order, the arrears to May 5 last being £27. The defendant applied for a variation of the order.—-The. magistrate stated that the defendant did not deserve much consideration, but the order was not one which could be kept up. Arrears over £l2 would be remitted, and the weekly payment would be reduced to 12s 6d a week. The defendant would be sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he paid 12s 6d a week and 3s a week, off the arrears, ' Frank Sturgeon was proceeded against on a complaint for affiliation and maintenance inrespcctof an illegitimate child. —Mr L. R. Simpson appeared for the complainant, and Mr Neill for the de-fendant.—-Evidence was given by the complainant, who stated that she first met the defendant at Palmerston in May. 1929, and that he had frequently visited her at her home from then until the end of the year. Before the child was born, the defendant admitted paternity to her mother,, and promised to marry her.— Evidence was also given by the complainant's mother,—The defence consisted of a denial of paternity, Mr Neill contending that the complainant’s evidence was uncorroborated.—After hearing evidence uy the defendant arid ,his. father his Worship, said he could -not believe the defendant’s story, and made an. order adjudging himthe father of the child.—Maintenance was fixed at 15s pet week, and the defendant ivas ordered to pay confinement expenses (£l4 14s), . ■ ; •
