HIBERNIAN SOCIAL AND DEBATING CLUB.
FIFTH .ANNIVERSARY. The fifth anniversary of the Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club vf as held on Monday last in the club rooms. The president (Mr A. GilUck) presided, and welcomed tlie large attendance. Amongst those present were the Rev. Fathers Tylee, Adm., Hanrahan, and M’Devitt, several of ■ the Christian Brothers, and'other friends of the club. The president proposed the loyal toast.- In doing so he said all connected with the club could look back with pride on . its past record and feel every'confidence in its future well-being. Iri proposing the toast of the "Hierarchy and Clergy,” Mr J, Toner said they ’ regretted, the unavoidable absence of the bishop, whose assistance to and' interest in the club had proved of very great benefit. ■ In replying to the toast, the Rev. Father Tylee; Adm., said the progress of the club was .a cause for rejoicing. The example set by the bishop in *'the club’s regard was an example necessarily followed by his clergy. , The Rev. Fathers M'Devitt and Hanrahan spoke in response, and tendered their congratulations. Mr J. P.' Ward proposed the toast of “ The Club,’” and in doing so availed himself of the opportunity to speak at length bn club life generally, andwhat it stood for when applied iri the' right direction. He expressed gratitude to the founders of the club and to those who had aided by their consistent labour and support in enabling it to teach its present high status. In responding, the president paid tribute to the wise guidance, of the bishop, whose willingness at all times to assist the club had won the grateful appreciation of every member. While justly proud of the club’s achievements, they were ever mindful of what - they owed to numerous friends whose influence 1 and helpfulness deserved all the 1 recognition it was possible to bestow. He thanked the Christian Brothers, through.whose influence many of their eX-pupils joined the club and rendered very •'efficient ser-, vice as individual members and as office bearers. . Mr J. E. Ryan (vice-president) also spoke .in response to the toast. “ The First Committee ” was ably proposed by Mr F. Moloney, and responded to. by Mr J. N. Smith and Mr J, J. Marlow, jun. The toast of “The Hibernian Society" was proposed by Mr F. G. Brown, and in response Mr J. J. Marlow (district deputy) gave a fine address, treating the subject in 'an eloquent and impressive manner. “ Sister Clubs ” was proposed by Mr J. J. Marlow, jun., and responded to by Mr J. Kerr (St. Patrick’s Social and De bating Club, South Dunedin) and Mr M. Hayes (Christian Brothers Old Boys’ Association). The toast of “The Christian Brothers ” was responded to by. the Rev. Brothers O’Sulljvan and Moloney. At intervals entertaining items were given by Mr J. Kennedy and Mr J. P. Ward.
