CUSTOMS CLEARANCES.
THE PRIME MINISTER’S WARNING CHARACTERISED AS ILLOGICAL. (Special to Daily Times. » WELLINGTON, June 14. ihe warning issued by the Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) that if importers tuuke large bond clearances in anticipatiou of possible Customs tax increases by Parliament shortly, they will be liable to pay extra duty on the cleared goods, was commented on by Mr D. J. M'Gowan (president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce) to-day. Mr Forbes’s statement was characterised by Mr M'Gowun as an unwise move. The thing is not logical to my mind/' he said. “Supposing someone took a hundred cases out ot bond to-day and sold them. What chance would there be ot collecting extra duty in a month’s time? Probably the cases would be sold again.” Mr M'Gowan said that his firm had not cleared anything out of the ordinary in the last day or two.
