PALMERSTON DOG TRIALS.

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS. The weather experienced yesterday for the Palmerston dog trials was, during the greater part of the day, anything but conducive to good work, A strong wind made it at times almost impossible for the dogs to hear the commands, the work in consequence suffered. As the day wore on, however, the wind lessened in strength, and those competitors who were fortunate enough to draw their runs late in the afternoon had a much better chance of retaining control of their dogs over the whole distance. The Open and Maiden Heading was concluded in tlie mornings whcij the wind was strongest, with the result that the dogs really had no chance, and several lost complete control of their sheep. The Open and Maiden Huntaway was started shortly before noon. When allowance is made for the weather conditions, jr . be admitted > tbat the work in tins event yesterday was not a great deal behind the standard of the championship huntaway. In fact, the outstanding feature of the meeting has been the general excellence of the huntaway work. Ihe sheep, although not so fast us on Wednesday, were still somewhat too wild l mi r display of downright “ punching.” ihe final pinch approaching the last set of poles brought about the downfall of more than one otherwise promising dog. Several competitors, instead of keeping their dogs well orf their fast rmS saeep, made_ the mistake of pushing them too hard, with the result that more than ep f ave considerable at kill and split away from l entries were again large, 3? dogs, had been nominated, Despite the utmost despatch in Sverai nn i nB of f the herewere^ill several dogs to compete when the apdarkness made it necessary to bring the day a proceedings to a close.
