FIRES.
FANCX GOODS SHOP DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.) STRATFORD, May 22. Fire early this morning completely gutted the fancy goods shop of W. S. Clark, in Broadway. The flames had a good hold when the brigade arrived, but it confined them to the one shop, which is in the middle of a big block of wooden buildings. A serious conflagration would have followed but for the prompt action of the brigade. Clark's stock., completely destroyed, was insured for £1450 in the State Office, but is Valued at about £3OO more. The building was insured for £BOO in the Standard office. i PUBLIC LIBRARY DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.) MASTERTON, May 22. The Martinborough Public Library, with an attached dwelling, occupied by Mr and Mrs Findlay, was badly damaged by fire and water_ in the early hours of the morning. The brigade was promptly on the scene,, but the .fire was not extinguished before considerable damage had been done and the books had suffered from smoke aud water.
