Travis estate lias been 'given to the Dominion Cancer Campaign Fund for research at Otago University, the rest oi the income from the bequest of about £4OOO will tie used to establish a special department for research into tuberculosis and cancer at the Christchurch Hospital if the nego tiations now in progress between the trustees of the estate and prominent Christchurch doctors come to fruition Mr Travis left the money with the pro vision that it be applied towards di a covering cures for these two diseases He was a resident of Christchurch, martihis money there, and the trustees. Mcssiv H. Pearce and G. V. Bcrgh, feel that other things being equal, the money should be spent in Christchurch, (n this the medical men concerned concur, and it is considered that any work done in cancer research ‘ the Christchurch fins pital will not .overlap that done at Otag' University, while for the study of tuber cuiosis special facilities already exist in Christchurch. “1 and my co-trustec are anxious, u it is at all possible, to confine the re search under the terms of the bequest to Christchurch.” said Jilr Pearce, flc explained that Mr Travis’s will had been proved for about £BO.OOO. but after private bequests had been made a'nd a paternal Government had tak'-r f 15.000 in death duties '• spite of a protest, about £40.000 was left as the capital fund for research.
