WAIPORI RIVER.
STATEAIENT BY CR SHACKLOCK. “THE CORNER TURNED.” Information regarding the position at Waipori was supplied to the City Council last night by Gr Shacklock (chairman of the Electric Power and Lighting Committee). He stated that he was glad to be able to report that for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday the dam had ‘'held its own,” and during the day the level had been maintained. Some heavy showers had fallen at Waipori, and there was snow on the mountains. It was expected that in the next three or four days further water would come down to the dam. He had the idea that the department was now turning the corner. He did not want it to be understood, however, that consumers were free to use as much power as they wanted. If the consumers practised economy it would be only a short time before considerable relief could be obtained. Fortunately so far it had not been necessary to add to Unemployment. It would not be necessary to close factories on Saturday. A full tram service would not be run today, but some additional trams would be brought into operation. He hoped that a much better service would be run.
