CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION. A meeting of the Committee for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by -the Rev. W. A. Saunders (chairman) and Messrs S. Leith, J. Brown; W. F. Sligo, A. D. Sutherland, A. Stewart, J. M'Gregor, and Mrs Porteous. A letter was received from Mr A. W. M. Hoodie, secretary of the Dunediu Stock Agents’ Association, stating that the communication from the society reporting that at clearing sales cows were frequently overcrowded and suffered from the want of milking had been placed before his members. As a result their auctioneers had been asked to do what they could to help in this matter. His members considered, however, that it was more a matter for the inspector of the society to look into. If he could attend some of the clearing sales of dairy cows it would show the public that this particular form of cruelty was being watched. —lt was agreed that most good in preventing the suffering could be- done by the society’s inspector, and it was decided to instruct him to centre attention on sales of dairy stock for the time being. Mr C. M'Kay (Queenstown) wrote’ agreeing to accept the position of one of the society’s solicitors.—Noted. The Wellington Society forwarded ii copy of a proposed constitution for a federation of New Zealand. societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals Mr. Sligo said that it would cost their society £IOO a year if it joined the federation. They had turned down a similar proposal before, and he saw no reason why they should change their mind on the subject.—The chairman said it would perhaps be better if he looked through the proposed, constitution and drew up a report on its advantages and disadvantages. It was decided to adopt the chairman’s suggestion. , The inspector (Mr J. Craig) submitted a report on visits lie had made to various sales and shows, the report being adopted.
