EFFORT TO EFFECT REDUCTION. A REPRESENTATIVE CONPBr'enCB. (Special to Daily Times.) Wellington; May 12. The composition was announced to-day by the Minister of Transport (Mr W. A. Veitch) of the conference he proposes to call with a view to discussing means of reducing the number of accidents due to the heavy increase in motor traffic. The Minister is inviting to be present one representative each of the Health Department, the Police Department, the Education Department, the Department of Censue and Statistics, and the State Accident and Insurance Department; one town clerk representing the borough councils of the Dominion, one county council clerk representing the county councils, a representative of the North Island Motor Union, a representative of the South Island Motor Union, a representative of the insurance “ pool ” formed to undertake third party insurance risks, and representatives of the Transport Department, ' Mr Veitch remarked that experience had shown quite clearly that only a small proportion of the motop accidents occurring in New Zealand were railway crossing accidents. In the great majority ot them purely road traffic was concerned. “ I am convinced,” he said, “ that a great many ,of them can be eliminated without any unreasonable interference with road traffic, and, that being so, before taking action 1 feel I should get the advice of representatives of all the parties concerned. I hope I ■ shall have their cooperation. I am particularly anxious to fulfil {he functions, of a Transport Minister. by ensuring the safety and efficiency of road traffic with as little interference as possible. I am quite confident that with the co-operation of those whom I am consulting in a representative capacity I shall succeed in bringing about a comprehensive improvement in road traffic conditions.”
