DUELLING IN GERMANY
PROHIBITING REGULATION. SURGERY SOCIETY PROTESTS. BERLIN, April 29. The special correspondent of The Times at Berlin states that the German Surgery Society has protested against the inclusion of a clause in the penal code prohibiting students from duelling, on the following grounds (1) The sword is not a lethal weapon if proper bandages are used and due precautions are taken; (2) duelling is really a fighting sport, not a fight; (3) sword wounds are far more harmless than blows with the first, as boxing deaths prove, whereas nearly all duelling deaths are due to indirect causes like blood poisoning. Consequently it is contended that the legislature would display partiality in forbidding duelling unless it also prohibited the employment of the dangerous gloved fist. ■ The society adds: “ Boxing panders to degraded purposes like sensationalism and profit making, whereas duelling only cultivates courage.”
