FAREWELL SOCIAL.

ME JAMES HOGG HONOURED. A pleasant function took .place at tho Vedic Restaurant yesterday afternoon, when Mr James Hogg, of Messrs M‘Leod Bros., who will leave shortly on a business trip to Canada and the United States, was entertained by the executive of the Otago Master Grocers’ Association and was made the recipient of a handsome travelling rug. The president of the association (Mr I. .M’Farlane), in making the presentation, laid emphasis on the extremely cordial relations, existing between manufacturers and retailers in Dunedin—a state of things which owed its inception in no small degree to Mr Hogg’s tact and cooperation while president of the Manufacturers’ Association. The rug which he would ask their guest to accept was intended as a concrete expression of goodwill from the grocers of Dunedin towards Mr Hogg and to his firm, whose straightforward methods of business left nothing to be desired. On behalf of his associates he heartily wished Mr Hogg a pleasant trip overseas and a safe return. Mr A. Goodley (past president) endorsed these remarks, and said he would look forward with keen anticipation to seeing Mr Hogg on his return, as he was sure he would have something interesting ,to say on the -business methods employed in other countries, Mr Hogg, on rising to speak, wa» greeted with acclamation. He said that when he was invited to partake of a little refreshment .with the company, he had no idea that his friends, the grocers, were going to make him such a valuable present. He deeply appreciated the kind things which had been said about him r and he was even more gratified at the Ihrli esteem in which his firm, was held by the retailers of Dunedin. trace, the beginning of a better understanding between retailers and manufacturers to the-time of the Exhibition. Tha idea of a. “Made in New Zealand” week started about that time, and the grocers were the first to take it up. In the course of his business he had travelled extensively throughout the Dominion, and with all sincerity he could say that iu loyalty, co-operation, and the giving of a fair deal to the public, the retailers of Dunedin were second to none. The Otago Grocers’ Association was fortunate in its choice of officers, and its members recog- ■ nised to the full the true meaning of the old saying that unity was strength. He hoped to come back to Dunedin with a store of information on business methods abroad, and all that he had learned on his travel* would be at the dftposal of his friends.
