ELLIOTT STANDFIELD CASE.

FURTHER REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE. BOARD TO TAKE NO ACTION. Discussion on the Elliott Standfielcl case was revived at the meeting of the Otago Hospital Board on Thursday night, when a letter was received from Mr Mark Silverstone asking that the board reconsider its decision in regard to Standfield, and make him an allowance, _ Since the allowance had been discontinued, the letter stated, Standfield had been sheltering in a vermin'-infested place in Machimself wrote to the board, stating that he was living in a cellar with rats as his night companions. Ho was practically starving, and had it not been for the kindness of two friends he might have been found in a very bad jj r ’ J. W. Dove stated that he had been taken to the shop under which Standfield slept. He had descended into the dungeon,' and had seen what appeared to be the bed on which Standfield slept. It consisted of bags thrown on the floor. He could readily believe that the place wae rat-infested. The question was what tilt board could do with such a man. Mr J. W. Scnrr stated that Standfield had been offered work leading a blind man at 30s n week, and a further offer of a position feeding fowls for his board and 10s a week, but both of these be had refused. The board bad done all it could to find work for him, but he seemed o think that it should not find bun work, but merely give him money. On tlie motion oi Mi- O. aMLcnium it was decided to take no action.
