WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tlie monthly meeting of the Wnihemo County Council was held at Palmerston yesterday, there being present Crs O’Connell (chairman), Ritchie, Shent, M'Cabe, O’Xeill, Smith, Clark, Purvis, and Craig. IXSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector (Mr MTvor) submitted the following report; — - Bushey Riding.—Work on Twaddle’s load has been completed, twp new culverts have been put in, and tile road widened and gravelled. This road is now in first-class condition. The power grader has been cutting corrugations and grading in gravel on the main. high way, C.D., between Palmerston and Shag Point, and grading in gravel on Horse Range and Fleming’s roads. General surface work on various roads, cleaning out water tables, culverts, inlets and outlets, and clearing away large stones aiul all vegetable matter effected. The wing approaches at Bushey bridge have been pht in order, lihd renewed where required, and a culvert on Holroyd’s road repaired.—Approved. Goodwood Riding.~General - surface ■work ou the main GoodwoocT - rdtid and cleaning Out water tables 'andActUlvcrts has been. done. The corner on Settlement road lias been widened, but some extra work is required to be done before the contract will pass inspection.—Approved. Meadowfaank Riding, —The power grader lias been employed cutting corrugations and grading in gravel on the main highway, P.Q., between Palmerston and Bowker’s bridge,. The portion of the proposed tt'ork; betw.enj.thet borough boundary and .Gle railway crossing, passed to be done ; at the .Tajst county meeting, is not approved of .by 'tlie highways inspector. To meet the higjiyvays requirements this portion, of, highway will require to be scarified reformed, and curves provided:'with adequate super-elevation. , : The steam roller is now in the district; and can be obtained to. help with the work. Gravelling will require to follow the rolling. Near Croxford’s a culvert has been: repaired and protection railings and pfists renewed where required.—Approved; the work suggested by’the Highways, Board to lie carried out at the' jirost suitable time. x / Blue Mountain Riding. —-Steel's bridge on Pagan’s road has been completed and painted, and very satisfactory-work done. The power grader has been ‘grading in gravel and doing formation work on, the old Dunback and Horse Range roads. The Domain bridgeifit Dunback has been repaired, new docking put in where required, and running planks put down, tarred and sanded over. The wings and railings of the swing bridge at Dunback, and the Horse Range bridge, have been repaired and put in order. New planks have been put over the Shaw River at Pearson’s crossing.—Approved. Dunback Riding.—The power grader lias completed grading, and widening and formation work done, on the Stoncbnrn/ Sutherland’s, Jamieson’s, and Phillips roads. The work , has been very well done considering' the very .dryland hard) state of the roads at present. A quantity of schist rock or gravel is required on a bad pinch on Phillips road. This portion of the road'is'dangerous during wet weather. E. Frame and Co. are making satisfactory progress/iwith. contract No. ”08 (gravelling on the Stoneburn road), and 214 cubic yards of gravel put out to date. Water tables, culverts, inlets and outlets, on various roads have been attended to, and cut-offs made- where required. The protection railings and posts at the Grange oil the main highway have been repaired. —Approved; inspector to attend to the bad pinch on Phillips road. Green Valley Ruling.—Repairs to various crossings.. and waterways on Main Highway, P.Q., have been done, and a concrete, abutment and apron -has been made at the crossing near .the Green Valley School, and the timber is now on the ground to build railings and approaches. The. contractor is now at work making preparations to begin the building of the Pigroot bridge immediately after Easter. Cleaning cut water tables, making cut offs, and attention to- culverts on Pigroot portion of highway has been dune. —Approved. / . Macraes Riding.—E. K. Gallagher has completed Contract No. CO; maintenance gravelling and metalling on the main highway, D.M. between Tipperary Gully and Roys corner; a total of 818 cubic yards having been put out. ■ The same contractor has commenced ContracT No. 72; gravelling on the Macraes to Hyde •road. The horse grader has done grading and formation work on the Mareburn road between Curries and Kenneys. A quantity of gravel has been put on this road, and three riew 9m culverts put in. General surface work on the main highway, D.M., cleaning out water tables and culverts, and ,raking in gravel and metal Whore required has been carried out. — Approved. CORRESPONDENCE. The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote that in consequence of the proposal to appoint a group of traffic inspectors not being generally understood, a meeting would be hold on April 15 at the Council Chambers, Dunedin. —The chairman mentioned that he had attended the meeting, and practically everyone decided that it was necessary to have inspectors, one for the country and one for the city. There would he a subsidy from the Government. - A committee had been set up and applications would be called for inspectors. —The chairman was thanked for attending the meeting. The district engineer, Dunedin, wrote that the tender of Mr E. K. Gallagher for the supply and delivery of 300 yards of gravel at 7s 3d per yard had been approved, and that ou receipt of authority from Wellington the work might he put in hand. —He also wrote similarly with regard to the acceptance of a tender for quarrying, breaking, and carting 450 yards of schist at 7s 3d per yard. Further, that ho could not recommend the expenditure of Public Works .Fund balance on maintenance. —Received, So far as the last matter was concerned the inspector stated that he had written explaining that the money was required for formation work, but no reply had been received. The inspector was instructed to proceed

with the work when the money was available. The Minister of Public "Works wrote concerning the metalling of Four Milo road anti stated that the matter was receiving consideration.—ln view of the fact that the council had already expended a considerable sum out of its own funds, tlie board decided to agree to a subsidy of £100: £2 for £l. The necessary authority had been issued.—Received. The district engineer, Dunedin, forwarded a list of balances of authorities 'held by the/council at March 31, 1030. and asked to be supplied with the actual expenditure unclaimed on .that date in each case. —Received. Particulars with regard to the erection of tlie Pigroot Creek Bridge wore forwarded by the Public Works Department; the county’s proportion being £239 10s.—Received. „ The board’s representative on No, 10 District Highways Council wrote that approval had been given to extend the contract for the Dunback-Middlcnmrcli Main Highway by placing 400 yards of metal between Xenthonie road and Roy’s Corner at schedule rates; namely, 3a od per yard.—Received. Tlie seyetary of the Otago Hospital Board wrote that the levies on local mitlioritiea for tlie year IDIHHD3I mriltl bo approximately the same as for the current year.—Received. The Waikonaiti County Council wrote with regard to a stringent examination of all service’cars using main highways ' which had., been , considered at n conference of representatives of local bodies in Xos. 10 and 17 Highway Districts, and suggested that the Waihonio Comity Council support tlie - ' recommendations made.—Received. GENERAL. The successful tenderer for the supply and delivery of 00 yards of Shag River gravel ou Swallow’s road was E...K. Gallagher at 7s ad per yard. For the supply and delivery of 400 yards of schist rock on .Four Mile road the succesfuL tenderers were O’Malloy Bros,, at 3s 2d per yard; _ ’ The remaining contract was for widening a side' cutting, filling in, and formation work on Main Highway P. 2 in the vicinity of Pigroot,Creek. The successful tenderer was E. K. Gallagher, and the price £79. Accounts amounting to £O6O 0s 2tP were passed for payment.
