/ S. A. LAY SELECTED, (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, April 10. _ The selection of S. A. Lay (WaiiganuiTaranaki) the brilliant New Zealand javelin-throwing champion, which was made yesterday by the Selection Committee to represent New Zealand at the British Empire Games in Canada in August, was confirmed at a special meet iirr of the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to-day. In submitting its report the committee stated that R. A. Rose naki) and P. Munro (Wellington) nere not available. E. Grose, the Canterbmy cyclist, could not be sent, as no ejelin events are being provided for at the ga Lay has repeatedly registered performances which stamp him as a javelin thrower in the world’s best class. He was a member of the New Zealand team which competed at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, but tbeie he failed to reproduce the form shown by him at the British championship meetin- in which he took part prior to going to° Amsterdam. Lay won thc Bntmh championship with a throw of 222 ft . in. He is the holder of the Australian and New Zealand record of 20ii{t ILJin. but he lias a better effort to his credit, 200 ft Bin, registered last year and .recognised ns a New' Zealand record.
