MONTHLY MEETING. . The monthly meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council, held last night, was pre- , sided over by the Mayor (Mr W. L. M’Lean). Crs John Wright, G, A. 1 M'Leod, John White, L. S. Dyer made application for six : months' leave of absence as from May 1, i 1930. —Granted. _ , . i The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote regard- . ing the matter of the appointment , ot , group traffic inspectors, and stating that • a combined meeting of representatives of all the local authorities concerned would i be held on Tuesday, April 15- He asked 1 the council to appoint one or more repre- , sentatives.—The Mayor and chairman of - works appointed as councils representatives, with power to act. A petition was received from employees of Mosgiel Woollen Company regarding tar-sealing bicycle track on Factory road. • —Request declined. The District Highway Council, replying : to council’s letter of 21st ult., stated . that the board would subsidise in the full width in the business area of Gordon road, providing same had. been metalled . previously to the road being declared a main highway.—Noted. The District Highway Board forwarded Treasury voucher for £76 17a 4d subsidy on Gordon road highway.—Notea. . . The secretary, Taieri Poultry Society, wrote acknowledging councils letter, of 28th ult., and stating that his committee considered the charge of 10 guineas, as being too high, as it would not leave -fitly . profit on the show, and offering council the sum of 7 guineas for all charges in connection with the hire of hall. If that was not accepted they had decided not to hold the show this year. —The council adhered to its former decision, the Mayor and clerk to draft a suitable recapitulating offer made to society and to publish copy of council’s letter. ■ The secretary, Otago Hospital Board, wrote intimating that the levies on local authorities for the year 1930-31 would be fixed at approximately the same as the current year.—Noted. . J. Walker wrote making, application for a renewal of, license for billiard room. —Granted subject to police report being ' satisfactory. Tenders for removal of night soil and. "garbage were considered, and that of J. S. M M ill an accepted. The secretary, Mosgiel Brass Band, wrote acknowledging receipt of council 8 subsidy, and stiting that balance, shfeet would be forwarded immediately it was prepared.—Received. . The secretary, Taieri Pipe Band, made application for the usual subsidy of £lO towards the band’s funds.—Approved. COMMITTEE REPORTS. The Works Committee reported as follows: Septic Tanks; Receiving tanks had been dealudged, and all channels swept and outlets kept clear. Sample of effluent discharging into the stream tafcen that day .was laid upon the table. Drainage; Sewer connections had been put in for ratepayers in Forfar street. Gordon road: The outlet pipe from the subsoil drains in -the recreation ground had been connected up with the storm-water drain; the ditches cleaned out in Church street. Storm-water pipes from two. properties in Gordon road had been laid across the footpath to the water table. Water supply: All scour and air valves on the pipe line had received the usual attention. Both intakes had been cleaned out and all dead ends of mains run off. Three fireplugs in Gordon road had been re-washered and one fire plug block in Factory road raised to surface level. A leaky valve on main at Joll’s Corner and two defective stop-cocks in Forth street had been repaired. New water service had been installed to a residence in. Green street. Maintenance: The tarring of footpaths in Gordon road had been completed to Bush road; Factory road had also been completed. Gravel had been carted from the dump to. fill depression at intersection of Cargill and Church streets. The pavilion in the recreation ground had been thoroughly cleansed and the playing area of both the football ground and tne hockey ground had been re-marked. The grader had been out on Gordon road and Quarry road on the following dates: —The 18th, 19th, and 20th, and the second cutting of the grass on the street line was being proceeded with. Tenders for the removal of nightsoil and garbage: After due consideration, the committee recommended that" all tenders "be declined and that fresh tenders for a period of two years ■be called for. A fresh, clause to be inserted in regard to the upkeep of the park and recreation ground. All the eight tenderers to be notified to this effect. Petition from'residents, in Mure street: The committee recommended that this matter be referred to the inspector, with instructions to have the work done ’at the earliest opportunity. A building permit for a new motor, garage had been granted. Re- ; turn of building permits for the year ending. March 31 had been prepared—new buildings* £15,827; additions and alterations to existing buildings, £1630; —total, £17,457. Reconstruction of Gordon road; It was recommended that Mr Roberts prepare the necessary plans and specifications, including all ■ preparatory work, and submit same to the Highway Board at the earliest’ opportunity.—The report was adopted. The, Finance Committee recommended for payment accounts amounting to £374 17s 3d. The bank pass book showed a .credit balance of £l6l 12s 4d. Regarding an application for remission of penalty on rates, ,the committee recommended that the ratepayer be informed that the coun : oil bad no power to remit that penalty, once it was imposed.—Adopted. GENERAL. • Some correspondence was before the ■ council regarding improvements to the pavilion on the, recreation ground.—After discussion, it was resolved that the-eoun-cil’s inspector draw up plans and specifications, and if the Football .Club wns satisfied with these, tenders be called for the work,, a sufa-eommiftee of the council to deal with the tenders.
