CHILD MARRIAGES

EVASION OF INDIAN ACT. GREAT LAST-MINUTE RUSH. (United Press Association.) (Hy Eleotrlo Telegraph—Copyright.) DELHI, March 27. Hundreds of thousands of boys and girls, mostly of the Hindu caste—many still in the cradle—have been married throughout India during the last few days in order to evade the provisions of the Indian Child Marriage Act, which comes into operation on Tuesday next. The Act raises the marriage age to 14, and the age of consent to IC. Most of the brides and bridegrooms are between nine and 12, but instances have been reported from the Bombay district where girls a few days old have been married in some cases to men 20 years their seniors.
