New books published last year numbered 9400, according to a list compiled bv the Publishers’ Circular, compared with* 9396 in 1928. New novels totalled 1658, nearly 200 more. Other classes showed increases are biography, medicine, historians! juvenile books. There has been a marked decline in travel books, poetry, and books on gardening, the fine arts and •ociologjr.
