SUMMONED FOR DEBT.
SMALL WAGES AND LARGE FAMILIES. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, March 6. Stories of small earnings and large families were told by judgment debtors who appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day to answer summonses issued against them. “Last week my earnings were Is 3d,” said one young married man, “ and in the last three mouths I have never earned more than 30s a week.” “ And yet you were able to get married,” said counsel. “My circumstances were better then,” was the debtor’s reply. “ I was earning about £3 or £3 10s a week.” No order was made. “ Unemployed,” was the terse reply of another debtor when questioned about his occupation. “When did your employment cease?” asked counsel. Debtor: Six or seven weeks ago. Just as judgment was entered against you?—No, just before. How many children have you?—Seven, and my wife is in hospital. So you stay at home and look after them instead of working?—Somebody has to look after them. The debtor stated that he was about £ls iu arrears for rent at present. “No order,” said the magistrate.
