STUART STREET _ (opp, Oban Hotel) Branch shop. Poke’s Bldgs- Cargill’s C*r. That the advent of town'planning in New; Zealand would spell emancipation for practising surveyors 'was the opinion, expressed by Mr A. H. Bogle, of Wanganui, at the inaugural meeting of the New Zealand Institute'of Town Planning in Wellington last week. He declared that no people in the Dominion had been so roundly condemned as the surveyors who had roaded and bridged the country in its infancy, and yet the Dominion had never possessed a more conscientious body of public servants. Surveyors within recent years had been bound down by Acts and regulations, and too often’by the owners of the land for whom they were working. The result had been that they had had to turn out work which they knew would not be for the ultimate good of the community aa * whole. Town planning principles would usher in a brighter and saner era. "May I say,” concluded Mr Bogle, “how grateful we pracising surveyors are that the long overdue and eagerly awaited Messiah, in the person of Mr J. W. MaWson, director of town planning, has been vouchsafed to us in our day and generation.”Sentence of II months’ imprisonment was passed at the Old Bailey on John Hamilton for cutting off a girl's hair while on a bus in Old Kent road. Hamilton, it was said v had been convicted eight times for similar offences since 1921. Every time he came out complaints were made of girls from 14 to 16 having their hair cut off in this way. The recorder (Sir Ernest Wild) “ Nobody else has any hair to cut, ,Do ladies, in the East End shingle more than thosf in the West End? ” Detective Sergeant Dawkins: “I think they do now.” Lift Right Off!
