HARRIS TWEEDS SOMETHING ABOUT THESE VERY FASHIONABLE AND DISTINCTIVE SUITINGS . . . Real Harris Tweeds come from Harris, which is not an island, a# is generally supposed, but the southern part of the Isle <yf Lewis, in the. Outer Hebrides, on the West Coast of Scotland. Harris is divided from .Lewis by a range of mountains rising to a height of almost 3000 feet, so that the villages are distant and isolated from Stornoway, the only town in the whole island. Harris Tweed is a distinct type of cloth, hand-spun, hand-woven, and hand-finished by Crofters. These people are expert in . the. use of dyes, which they make from herbs, roots, and lichens, from which beautiful, rich colours: are obtained. After the Tweed is woven it is washed, by being placed in wooden tubs, usually three in a row, filled with boiling water and placed by . the side of a mountain stream. The water is heated in a pot over a peat fire close by. The cloth is then placed like a long serpent from tub to tub, and a girl stands in each one and actually washes the Tweed with her feet. This is done over, the whole length of the piece, and it is then placed out on the heather to dry. The water in these mountain streams is of a deep brown colour, caused by the streams passing through peat bogs, from which it derives certain properties that give the Tweed a soft handle after it has-been washed therein. There are probably no Tweeds in the world that possess the wearing qualities of these, hand-spun, hand-woven fabrics, and their popularity to-day among well-dressed men is greater than ever. . 1 We have a fine selection of these Unique Tweeds, in Artistic Colouryigs, of which we invite inspection. That is the scientific .way to combat the danger of tooth and gum disorders.
