MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mosgicl Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr W. E. M‘Lean) presiding. Crs L. S. Dyr, J. Mitchell, J. Wright, jun., J. White, J. Garrett, and G. M‘Leod were present. The commissioner of Crown lands, Dunedin, wrote acknowledging receipt of the council’s letter of February 7, in which it was advised that notice had.been served on the occupiers of sections 1,3, 5, and 7, Melville Park Settlement, of the council’s intention to cut off the water supply. He stated that as the persons affected were Crown tenants, the action taken naturally affected his department. He requested the council to reconsider their decision and to givt three months’ notice, so as to enable some arrangement to be come to between the department and the council. —Th clerk read a letter he had sent in reply, giving the amount of rates that were in arrears, and stating that the department had had ample notice. The council had decided to take a firip stand in the matter, as no redress could be obtained from either the Minister of Lands or the board, and the present action was an endeavour tq finalise the question. The amount outstanding in rates was £863, and the council was not prepared to let the matter drift arty longer. The commissioner of Crown lands had replied asking if certain other tenants on Melville Park had paid their rates. —The letter was received.

■ The secretary of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote asking for the organisation of a local committee to carry but the sale of poppies in connection with the association’s Poppy Day fund. — A eub-committee of the council was appointed to take preliminary steps in the matter.

The_ town clerk’s office, Dunedin, wrote notifying that the committee set up for the purpose having met, had resolved to recommend that one grodp traffic inspector be appointed for the city area and one for the balance of the territory in Nos. 16 and 17, district highways, and asking the council for ai expression of its views thereon.—The council resolved to write stating that certain information was awaited by it before replying. The secretary of the Brighton Domain Board forwarded the result of the conference held on February 24, and stated that according to the resolution passed the council’s quota would be £33 12s. He asked for the result of the council’s deliberations at the earliest convenience.— Held over until next meeting. The Works Committee reported that the following works had been performed during the month: —Septic tanks: The receiving tanks had been deslugged and cleaned, the grass and thistles adjacent had been cut, all channels swept and cleaned. The whole installation was in good worikng order. Water supply; Air and scour valves on the pipe line had received the usual v attention. The dead ends of .mains had been run off twice during the month. The protective work to the pipe line at Gow’s Crossing had been completed. Three defective water services had been repaired, and a defective fire plug in Gordon road rewashered. New water services bad been put in for ratepayers in Forfar street, and Gordon road. Water services ftad been disconnected in Melville Park. Seven building permits had been granted. Drainage: Sewer connections had been put in for ratepayers in Forfar street and Church street. Four house connections had been tested and passed, and three plumbing jobs inspected and passed. Maintenance; The horse grader had been out once during the month. The rough metal on Gladstone road had been blinded with gravel and the path made up with ashes. The fence at the railway crossing, Green _ street, had been re-greeted. The following streets had received a coating of tar and quarry dust:—Gladstone road, from the station to Gordon rpad. Queen street. King street, Gordon road, east side to Park street, and west side to Inglis street. A quantity of asphalt Juul been mixed for patching purposes. The lavatories in the recreation ground had been cleansed and painted in the inside. New swings had been erected also. The water cart had been out on Gordon road whenever necessary. Subsoil drainage. Recreation, Ground: Instructions had been issued to have this drain opened up, full investigations made, and a report furnished to the council at its next meeting; also that the open ditch in Church street be cleaned out. The clerk reported that the agricultural pipe drain at the Recreation Ground had been inspected and found to be clear. He suggested connecting the pipe out of the drain with the agricultural pipe. The ditch further along Church street was cleaned. This, should satisfy the wishes of the football club.—The report was adopted. The- General Committee recommended that. Mr R. Hughson’s tender for the supply of new scenery for the stage of the Coronation Hall, as set out in his letter of February 12, be accepted by the council, and the work proceeded with; tjiat the application from the School Bazaar Committee for the use of the hall on May 9 and 10 be granted upon the payment of the standing charges as arranged; that licenses for public halls be issued to all the applicants, subject to the approval of the fire inspector, and that in the one case where an application had not been made, final notice be served upon the proprietors.—Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past month had been £B3 5s 7d, and recommended for payment accounts totalling £164 13s 7d. The l>?" k book showed a credit balance of £460 6s '4d. —Adopted.
