Harry Abraham Samuels, a tailor, of Hamilton, previously convicted of bookmaking, was sentenced by Mr Justice Smith to nine months’ with hard labour on a charge of offering a bribe to two detectives. ; ! Mr Justice Smith, addressing prisoner, said his duty was undoubtedly a very difficult one, os, apart from bookmaking and this particular one, the prisoner semed to be a good business citizen. The detectives were to be commended for their prompt and skilful action and the jury for its thoroughly honest verdict. “ I cannot shut my eyes,” said his Honor, “to the fact that your case strikes to the very root of security and the administration of the law.” His Honor said a deterrent sentence must be imposed, and prisoner was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, with hard labouy.
