THE MANUKA WRECK.

question of salvage. VESSEL BADLY BROKEN. An investigation of the wreck of the Manuka where she lies off Long Point was made recently by a diver, who reported that the hull of the vessel is badly broken up and he held out little hope of salvage. The ship was found to be lying on the bottom, and her heavy cargo could still be seen in the open holds. The final offer for the hull and heavy cargo as it lies at present was forwarded to London some weeks ago, but no reply has yet been received by the local agents. Tenders for the salvaged cargo have been received, but it is thought that it will probably be more profitable to sell it as it comes, ashore rather than in one lot. One lifeboat came ashore at Tautuku Beach and was sold there, but the seven boats which were used, to carry the passengers ashore, and which were later towed to Port Chalmers, have not y\it been disposed of. . A great quantity of cargo came ashore in the days that followed the wreck, but nothing has been seen for" some time. A large quantity of what was thrown up on the shore has been recovered by the Customs Department, but it is said that an even greater quantity fell into other hands. Regarding Mr -Murray Fuller's pictures, the settlers are emphatic that all that have been washed up have been handed over to their owner, but it is considered in some quarters as curious that the pictures recovered by Mr Fuller have been only the less valuable ones of the collection.
