THEFT OF JEWELLERY.

MELBOURNE VISITOR VICTIMISED (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 26. A Melbourne visitor to Christchurch >vas the loser of jewellery to the value of £27 when a thief entered and searched the house of Mr G. Berry at 78 Hinau street, Riccarton, yesterday afternoon. The visitor, Mr P. Kerwin, has been staying in Christchurch for several weeks and yesterday was but sight-seeing. He left the jewellery—a gold watch and chain, sovereign case and ring—in bis room, pie family were also out, and by accident the back door had been left unlocked. The thief 1 thug found his way made easy when he visited the house between 2.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. Though he made a thorough search of the place he left very. little trace of his visit. He found practically nothing of value until he came to Mr Kerwin’s room at the side of the house. There, in addition to thP jewellery,* he discovered a pair of practically new boots. These he put on and left his own behind. Mr Kerwin valued the articles highly from sentime ij reasons. The chain vgas a heavy gold one, he says, with two pendants, one green and one red.
