YOUTHFUL CRIMINALS.
DEPREDATIONS ON THE PUBLIC magistrate expresses concern. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 25. “ The number of crimes committed by young people is getting notorious, judging by the number of cases which come More tliis court, if at 1 too many crimes of ail kinds are being committed by young people. A method must be devised to protect the public from the depredations of yohng men of this type. It is very hard to know what to do with them. We may only take the remedy the law allows, and that with ho uncertain hand.” These remarks were made by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.._ in the Magistrate’s Court this morning in sentencing three young men who appeared on charges of theft. Charles Owen voice, aged 22, a carpenter, was sentenced on »II charges of theft to periods of imprisonment with hard labour ranging from four months to 48 hours, the sentences to be concurrent. Thomas Charles Dickson, aged 10, a carpenter, was sent to the Borstal Institute for a term not exceeding two years. He appeared on eight different charges. Hugh Grant Anderson, a carpenter, aged 22, who was concerned in only one of flic charges was admitted to probation for two years. He was also, ordered to pay 15 to the probation officer during the period of probation as restitution.
