(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, February 25. WESTERLY GALE. A westerly gale that raged yesterday afternoon proved very destructive amongst fruit trees. In some orchards branches were broken and the ground littered with fallen apples and plums. • PERSONAL. The superintendent of police for Otago, Mr J. C. Willis, visited Balclutha to-day on official business,-"; • Mr S. H, James returned last night from a two mouths' trip to Australia. ' A happy Girl Guides’ function took place in St. Mark’s Hall last night, when Miss A. Allan, who has held the position of captain for four/ years and. was made a district commissioner last year, was accorded a farewell on the eve of her departure for Dunedin to enter the Otago University. The evening was devoted to games, competitions, and musical items. During ap interval Captain H. Stevenson, on bebalf of the Guides, presented the guest of the evening with a handsome umbrella and ‘ Mrs White (president of the association), for tbe association. Rangers, and Brownies, made the presentation of a suit case and xylonite tray. Both speakers made eulogistic reference to Miss Allan’s rare enthusiasm and energetic work on behalf of the Guide movement, and wished her great success in her future career. _ BUSINESS ITEMS. Still another Balclutha business has changed hands, Mrs R. Newson having disposed of the* Kiwi tea rooms and fruit business to Mrs Wilson, of Mataura. The South Otago Finance Company was the , selling agent. Tenders for the bankrupt stock of E. A. F. Garchow, mercer, Balclutha, closed on Friday, the succiisful tenderers-being Messrs fl. and J. Smith, Ltd., of Invercargill, for the stock, and Messrs W. Penrose and Co., Dunedin, for the shop fittings. There were four tenderers. EARLY SETTLERS. At a meeting of the Early Settlers’ Picnic Committee last night arrangements were finalised for the reunion to be held on the Show Ground at Balclutha on Friday. The Minister of Railways (Mr W. B. Taverner) and the Minister of Internal Affairs' (Mr P. A. de. la Perrelle) wrote regretting inability to attend, and wishing the pioneers success. A number of speakers have been secured for the occasion, and all visitors arriving by train’from north 1 and south will be driven to the grounds, and those who desire it will also bp taken for a motor tour of the neighbourhood. AN OLD RESIDENT. Mrs Peter Blackwood, who died at Dunedin on Friday night at the advanced age of 87, had been a resident of Balclutha for over 50 years. She was a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland, and her late husband was employed in the buildU 1", bridge over the Molyneux at Balclutha after- the big flood of ’7B. BOWLING. Dunedin and Southland commercial travellers met in a friendly game on the Balclutha green on Saturday morning, the match resulting in a win for Dunedin by 10 points (74 —(14).
