ST. KILDA BOROUGH.

' FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEETING. ' The fortnightly meeting of the St, Kilda Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr J. Beattie) in the chair. There were also present Crs T. D B. Eoy, F. 0. Gillam, G. Glue, W. G. Baird, C. Conn, H. H. Leary, R. Telfer, E. Longworth, and A Smiley. ’ . PETROL TAX. Notification was received from the chairman of the Main Highways Board that the Minister of Transport had allocated to the council £225 6s 2d; this amount being the proportion of petrol tax collected for the period ended December 31, 1929, and payable to the council in terms of the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, —Reserved. ‘ TRAFFIC INSPECTORS. The secretary of the special committee set up i to consider the appointment of group traffic inspectors, wrote intimating that as the Highways Board' was willing to pay a subsidy not exceeding £1 for £1 on the salary and expenses of a traffic inspector, providing that tire scheme proposed was a satisfactory and workable one. The committee had decided to recommend that one inspector be appointed for the city and one for the balance of the territory in the group, both inspectors to act in conjunction with each other. The writer requested that the council consider the niatter and advise him as to its views.—The Mayor said- that, in his opinion, the recommendation of the committee _was absurd. It would be better if the St. Hilda area were included with the citar.—Cr Longworth said that it would be more satisfactory if an inspector were appointed to control, say, the Green Island, Peninsula,, and St. Kilda districts. “-It was decided, on the motion of Cr Longworth, seconded by Cr Roy, to refer the matter back to the Highways Board, .requesting ,a clear definition of the various FOREMAN'S REPORT. f( ? r eman (Mr J. Glyma) reported that during the past fortnight penetration and ter sealing oyer 11 chains of Ferguson street and 28 chains of Royal crescent h®d been completed. He recommended that during the / ensuing fortnight penetration and tar sealing in Ferguson and Lourley streets and patching in Bay View road be proceeded with, and recommended the purchase of 200 gallons of distillate of tar for killing weeds coming through the streets that had been repaired recently, and also to spray along the channels Of the work just completed.—The report wag' adopted. WATER SUPPLY.
