OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD EMPLOYEES.

On Saturday the Otago Harbour Board employees hold a most successful picnic at Outram on the show grounds. About 350 people travelled by train and a number motored out in the afternoon. A bright and warm day with toys, sweets, and nuts and races made all the children nappy. The picnic, organised by an able committee and*an efficient chairman (Mr “• Galloway) was a pronounced success, the board was represented by Mr T. coll ay.. The board’s engineer (Mr M‘G. A prize for the largest family on the ground was Won by W. Williams. The St. Joseph’s Boys’ Orphanage Band, conducted by Mr D; Whelan, greatly added to the enjoyment of the day. These young musicians provided excellent music, both on the boat apd at the grounds. The return trip was made at 6.15 p.m.

SEED, NURSERY, AND FLORISTS’ trades: The seed, nursery, and florists’ trades picnic was held in perfect weather and under most delightful conditions as to place and circumstance, at the picnic grounds at Ross’s Point vesterday. There was an attendance of fully 120. ‘The combined picnic idea originated in 1927, when a picnic was arranged for by the seedsmen and the nursery and florists were ,invited to join in. This was held at Brighton, and was such a success that it has become an annual function, the 192 S function being held at Taievi Mouth and the 1029 one at Karitane. This year all horticultural trades combined, and the picnic held at Ross s Point was voted to he the best yet. The' party was conveyed to the in three large motor buses

and a fleet of private cars. The following gentlemen formed the committee, and were responsible for carrying out the programme—Messrs M. Matheson, J. Weir, H. Bennett, W. J. Thomson, A. J. Lawrence, T. Y. Turner, D. T. L. Campbell, C, J Johnston, J Marshall, J. M'Kechnie, E- D. Smyth. Mr A. G. Skene was the starter, and Mr A. P. Hart acted as judge. Tug-or-War (nurserymen and seeds men). —This event, after an exciting contest. was won by the nurserymen. There were a number of other events, all of which were well contested. Mr George A. Green (secretary of the Horticultural Trades Association of New Zealand) presented the trophies, and. before doing so, congratulated the committee on the success of the gathering. Messrs Skene and Matheson distributed the prizes. Mr G. A. Skene thanked all who had in any way contributed to the success of the outing.
