FIRES.
; A HOTEL; DESTROYED' OTHER BUILDINGS DAMAGED. (Per United Press, Association.) .< BLENHEIM, February 24. The Masonic Hotel at Havelock, which was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday,. was a wooden building of 18 rooms owned by the Marlborough Brewery Company, and was insured for £ISOO in the. Queensland Office Company. There was also a cover of £3OO on the furniture in the' Phoenix Office. The licensee, Mr T. M. Sandiford, had insurances for £273 in the Coinmerial Union' and £l7O in the Norwich Union on his stock in trade and other contents. The entire contents, including boarders’ effects, hooks, etc., were destroyed.
Opposite the hotel the premises of Mr E. Howard Smith, general store, draper, were badly damaged by fire, smoke and water. This building is owned by Messrs Brownlee and Co., Wellington, and is insured for £IOOO in the Commercial Union. Mr Smith has a cover in the same office for £2125 on his stock.
The premises of Mr S, C. Dilrew, baker, and Mr W. H. Orsman, storekeeper, suffered minor damage. The origin of the outbreak is unknown.
