SMALLPOX AT AUCKLAND
PASSENGER ON THE AORANGL NO COMMUNICATION WITH SHORE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 23. There is one case of smallpox on board the Union linor Aorangi, which arrived here this evening from Vancouver, via Honolulu and Suva. The victim is a second class woman passenger from Vancouver. The vessel arrived at fiVclock, and after the health officers had been on board for some time it was announced that there would be no communication with the shore. The Aorangi will proto Motuihi Island quarantine station in the Gulf to-morrow ■ morning. She will land - ali passengers, and the vessel will be fumigated. Then the Australian passengers' will re-embark, and vessel will to Auckland, remaining in the stream till to-morrow night, when she will sail for SydneyPassengers for New Zealand will remain on the island. No catgo will be landed here, as the vessel will not berth. . A letter mail for New Zealand was discharged to-night, and the southern portion ' was despatched by train. The name, condition, and destination of the victim are not known. VICTIM A YOUNG ’WOMAN. CASE OF MILD TYPE. (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 231 The smallpox victim is a young woman, bound from Vancouver to Sydney. The case, which is of a mild type, developed in the last few days. The New Zealand passengers will be placed on Quarantine Island for three or four weeks, and the Aorangi /will sail for Sydney under quarantine. PATIENT FROM THE NALDERA. DEATH ANNOUNCED. Sharpe, of Melbourne, who was taken to hospital from the liner Naldera and developed smallpox, died to-day.
