MOTOR CYCLING.

WAIKOUAITI BEACH RACES. ■ , CHAMPIONSHIP TO GEODES. LYDERS RIDES WELL. Despite counter-attractions, close on ' 1500 enthusiasts journeyed to Waikouaiti Beach on Saturday to witness the Otago ,Motor Club’s second motor cycle race : meeting of the season. Conditions generally were all that could, be desired, and, although a strong north-easterly breeze ■ blowing down the course militated against any particularly fast times being registered. the racing was keen and productive of some close finishes. Although in the initial stages of the meeting the wind banked _ the water upon the beach, thus hampering the riders for room, as the tide receded further, the track became firmer and firmer, until for the last two events on the programme it presented a splendid surface. The most successful competitor of the day was P H. N..- Lydere,' who, piloting a sweetly-running A.J S., rode consistently throughout to take two first places and a , second. Especially ’good was nis/Performance in the 21-mile Karitane Handicap, an which, off the ,2min 48sec mark, he gave an attractive display of steady rid.ing and clean cornering. An Invercargill rider (H. J. Munro), astride oi a racylookmg Indian Scout, also rode well, but he lost time on. the 1 corners. The six-mile ®vent fell to him, and* 'espite the fact ■. that the handicaps appeared to be all in his favour in this race, he scored a welldeserved win. -.He also made a great bid for the 12-Mile Championship and up till the last lap of this race the issue was always in doubt between him and S.N. Geddes' and his veteran Indiab “ Bluey.” In the greater, part of the race the-lead alternated between these two until; comdown on .the. last leg, Geddes -unearthed a few .extra, miles per hour from his wonderful. old mount and notched a popular win. .Unfortunately, both these Indians broke connecting rods/ in the long handicap whenxthey. were going particularly well. In the case. ofGeddes, the mishap.:to his • machine was especially unfortunate, as it .precluded him 'from competing in the. J. A, Roberts Challenge Gup side car race. , ■ • 'with - bis Cotton, was surely worthy of a special prize, fir .consistence, lor, while hjs machine was not quite so speedy as some,of the others, his steady riding Drought him , third - place in no , lower than four races. J. R. Swan, \on a beautifully tuned -a. J .a., _ was another, rider who gave a good display, his - , dashing cornering and ?P ee ? along the. straights being one. of irf HUS&t spots of the meeting. In the gruelling 21-mile race- he managed hismachine and, although conceding the limit man 3min 9sec, he rode into second place only 100 yards ./ behind the winner. •/ and Nesbit. although .undoubtedly the > speediest machines on the couree; were dogged by bad luclf and, :irith '.the excepa T abort ; /dashes,’ never • rc ml y showed up at their best. r . me following are the■ results:— • BEACH HANDICAP.
