FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

ODDFELLOWSHIP. Meetings o£ the following Oddfellows' lodges were held in the respective lodge rooms during the past fortnight:— Leith No. 4.—N.G. Bro. E. K. Clarke presided over a fair attendance. Visiting Committee presented a very favourable report on sick members, and claims for payments were passed. The district secretary intimated that at the next meetmg of District Lodge the third degree would be conferred on eligible members. One candidate was initiated into the Order by the officers of the lodge in an impressive and efficient manner. Report from Picnic Committee indicated arrangements are well in hand for a successful outing. During recess a very pleasant hour was spent by members with reading, etc. .jhinden No. 19.—N.G. Bro. Kit to presided over a fair attendance. Report was received from Visiting Committee, and various sick claims passed. Advice received from eick members indicated that the special eSorts of Visiting Committee were being appreciated. Correspondence from Southern Cross Lodge, Wellington, relating to a Linden member now in Wellington was received. Application for transfer from Hokonui, Lodge was received and accepted. A very interesting competition was held, the chaplains charge being chosen for contest. Four brothers competed, and each cave an excellent rendition of the charge. N.G. Bro. Kitto being selected as the winner. Vote of thanks to the visitors was responded to by D.D.G.M. Bro. Kirkham, P.G. Bro. M'Arthur (Pioneer), P.G. Bro. A. Beveridge (St. Kilda). P.G. Bro. M. K. Glover (Maori Hill). . Unity No. 16.—N.G. Bro. Fergus presided over a fair attendance. Visiting Committee reported, favourably on various sick members. _ Correspondence was received Caversham Lodge (M.U.) reminding Unity of the annual card tournament between the two lodges. Resolved that invitation to play match on March 5 be accepted., Bro. Kirkham reminded the members that the annual picnic would he held on March 8. Bro. Fergus* invited all members to accompany himself and officers to Pioneer Lodge next meeting, when it was intended to pay an official visit.

Pioneer No. 1. —N.G. Bro. Olsen-pre-sided over a good attendance. Sick claims were passed on recommendation of Visiting Committee. As the half-yearly election of officers is due the members are showing a keen interest,* first nomination resulted in three members being progosed for chair of V.G. Visiting mem-, ers of Pioneer and other lodges were entertained with, cards,, and supper was provided. Maori Hill, No. 86.—N.G. Bro. A. W. Childs presided over a good attendance. Sick claims were passed on the. recommendation of the visiting Committee. It i was decided to accept-invitation' from Linda Eebekah Lodge to" attend. their thirty-fifth anniversary. N.G. intimated . that nest meeting would be in charge of - P.G. Bro. F. H. M‘Arthur, and he would like to see a large gathering owing to Bro. M'Arthur’s willingness at all times to entertain the members. Vote of welcome to visitors was responded to by Bro. Kirkham, P.D.G.M., Bro. Harborne (Linden). . . Linda Eebekah No. I.—The Linden Lodge room presented a very bright and attractive appearance on the occasion 1 of the thirty-fifth -anniversary of Linda Eebekah Lodge. A willing band of helpers had carried out a pretty scheme of decorations with the colours of tfye lodge, the result being much appreciated by the visitors. Many letters of congratulations were receive from sister lodges, and it was pleasing to see present many veteran members of the lodge, whose, loyalty to the lodge and Order is a striking example to young members. -After lodge was closed the floor was cleared for dancing, and, as a number of the sisters appeared in fancy dress, a very pleasing effect was added to the scene. Prior to supper. Grand Sire Bro. L. D. Eitchie addressed the large gathering, and conveyed the congratulations of the G.L.. of Australasia on the work done by Linda Lodge since 1895. He referred to the splendid record j of service by the old members, and made ; feeling reference to the late Bro.’James • Patterson, who was one of the founders of the-lodge. Bro. Eitchie, who is an eloquent and humorous speaker, entertained his audience with side references to present and past members. Lady D.D.G.M. Sister Dobson, on behalf of Eebekah Lodges in S.O. district; also made a happy ‘ speech in congratulating Linda Lodge. D.D.G.M. Bro. Kirkham, on behalf of South Otago District Lodge No. 1, extended congratulations and good wishes. During the evening very acceptable items were rendered by Sisters Gil-, cbrist, Anderson,- and MTiean,' A large number of members from Blower of Hereweka Lodge (Portobellp) were present, their visit being much appreciated by the town members. . GOOD TEMPLARY.

* The Star of Victory Juvenile Temple No. 31 met last Monday in the Kaikorai Presbyterian Sunday School Hall, with' Bro. Sell, superintendent, in charge. Bro. Alexander Miller presided. There was a good attendance of members, and two candidates were initiated. At the conclusion of the business games were played* The fortnightly meeting of the Beacon Juvenile Temple , was held on February 15 in the Curry Street Hall, Port Chalmers, C.T. Bro. B. Finch being in the chair. Bro. Cromarty, S.J.W., was appointed representative to Grand Lodge, and the members were notified' that Sis. Mrs Telfer had been appointed assistant superintendent for the temple. Prizes, given by Bro. T. Trewithick, G.S.J.W., were presented to V.T. Sis. B, Wilson and Mar. Sis. M. Morren, for getting new members. A Room Committee was set up, consisting of Mar. Sis. M. Morren, P.M. Sis. S. Underwood. C.T. Bro. B. Finch, Bro.' H. Wheeler, Bro. W.WaUgh, Sis. E.' Irwin, and Sis. T. Clark. The following were appointed as Sick and Visiting Committee: —Bros. Finch, W. Waugh, and H. Wheeler, Sisters J., Johnson, I. Farquharson, M. Telfer, and M. and R. Morren. Several members then rendered items of songs and recitations, after which games .were played. There was a good attendance of members at the meeting of the AH Nations’ Lodge last_ Thursday, C.T. Bro. W. D. Campbell in the chair. Visitors were present from the Star of Freedom Lodges. Notice was received of the annual meeting of Dunedin District Lodge, and it was decided to pay hn official visit. Reports were received from the Picnic and Visiting Committees, and from the Juvenile Temple. It was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent to Bro, and Sister Ilea (Rescue Lodge), who have been indisposed for some time. The programme was in the hands of Sister Mrs M’Cormack, L.D., and the following members contributed items:—Bros. R. Campbell, G. Smillie, A. Wade, Cromarty, Smith, the Rev. Finch. Sisters Matheson, Waugh, Duggie, Smillie, and Farquharson. Bro. Scott, P.C.T., conveyed greetings from his lodge, and invited members to a special meeting of the Star of Freedom Lodge and the Dunedin district church parade at tke Presbyterian Church, Kaikorai. The visitors were accorded a very hearty' vote of thanks. The weekly meeting of the Rescue Lodge No. 105 was held in the .Oddfellowa Hall, King Edwqrd street, on Tuesday, when Bro. T. 'H. Dalton, Chief Templar, presided over a large attendance of members and visitors. Five members from the Star of the South Temple were received and initiated into the adult lodge. A fair amount of business in con- 1 nection with the district and Grand Lodges was dealt with. Favourable reports were received from the delegates to the Juvenile Temple, After business was dispensed with a sacred and temperance programme was carried out, the following members contributing as follows:—Solos, Sisters D. Thorn, D. Sell, A. Steecdman, jun„ Bro. J. Restieaux; duet, Sisters G. Thorn and E. Page; recitation, Bro. James Hilton; mandolin selection, Bro. T. Cochrane. Community singing was whole-heartedly carried out by all present, accompanied by Bro. G. lies and W. lies, jun. Tlio Star of the South Juvenile Temple met prior to the Rescue Lodge on Tuesday, when - a large number of members was present. Bro. James Hilton was in charge, and after the usual business was put through. Sister L. Baird, assistant superintendent conducted several games of an amusing nature which were enjoyed by all. The Star of Freedom Lodge, No. 5. held its fortnightly meeting in the Kaikorai Presbyterian Sunday School Hall on Monday last, Chief Templar Bro. A. Reynolds presiding over a large 'gathering of members and visitors from the following lodges:—Rescue, No. 105. Hope of Caversham, No. 128, Hope of Dunedin, No. 155. and All Nations, No. 13. A ‘splendid nrogranime, arranged by Bros.'George and W. G. lies, entitled “A Night at Sea,” was carried out. selection (Bro. T. Coekrane}, helped to give effect to actual happenings during the Great War. A very enjoyable-supper was served, after which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all who had made the evening a success. The weekly meeting of the Ever Helpto' Juvenile Temple was held in the Caversham School gymnasium on. February \i, with Bro. Hilton, superintendent, in charge. Bro. E. Giles, C.T., presided over a good attendance .of members and adult members. The programme was in the hands of the adult members, and was enjoyed by all. .A vote of thanks was accorded to the adult members who were present. The Hope of Caversham Lodge, No. 128 held its weekly meeting in the Baxter Hall, Marion street, Caversham, Sister Mrs Giles, C.T., presiding over a large attendance of members and visitors from Rescue and Hope of Dunedin Lodges, who were given a cordial welcome. Correspondence was received from Bro. Price (grand secretary) and Bro. Dickerson, D.C.T. A vote of sympathy was -passes for bister Beverage (Rescue Lodge) in her recent sad bereavement. The following members contributed towards the programme:—Sister W. Thorn (song). Sister Steadman (reading), Bro. Hilton, and Bro. E. lies (song). A vote of. thanks was accorded to the visitors.
