SAFEGUARDING DUTIES
THE GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE. A DISCUSSION DESIRED. (United Press Association..), (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, February 21. (Received Feb. 23, at 5.5 p.m.) The Conservatives are asking for a day for a discussion of the Government’s attitude towards safeguarding duties. ! The debate will probably take place in a fortnight. It is recognised that normally no Chancellor should be asked to disclose any part of his financial proposals until Budget day, but it is urged that special considerations have arisen in the general stagnation of industry- and the steady growth of unemployment which followed Mr Snowden’s vague references to his. future intentions. A precedent was set by Sir Austen Chamberlain in 1921 when he anticipated the Budget because he believed it would restore confidence and reinvigorate trade.—Times Cable.
