THE NOISE NUISANCE.

TO THE EDITOR, Sib, —Kindly allow me space to ventilate a serious grievance. It is not a new °P®. On the contrary, it must be rather pick but, notwithstanding the age or the legitimacy ■of it, no serious effort, seems to have been made to remove the cause of this grievance. I complain of the noise of traffic in the vicinity of the Public Hospital. Everyone knows that the institution is unfortunately situated, but the misfortune of that could be greatly minimised if traffic were diverted from passing the Hospital on its four sides after- a certain sl hour in I the evening, and during the day, ; by ■an I intensive campaign by traffic policemen. The City Council cannot be congratulated on allowing a petrol service'’station to be erected on the corner of-St. Andrew and Cumberland streets, within a chain 01 ! ®° of the largest wing of the Hospital, where men and women, some’“sick unto death,” lie listening to the stoppings and startings of noisy cars—and, by thy way, to the yells of noisy children who should ’be in their beds. My wife is in,that wing at the present time,- and, as I sat with her, only to-night she was startled by a resounding “ backfire ” from the direction of the service station. It is reasonable to believe that she was only one of many patients to jump ” in their beds from that one report; and how often during the day and night they are disturbed by noises of the kind only the poor souls who lie suffering can answer! ' Shall we go on allowing our sick to be the objects of thoughtlessness and ineptior shall we make a decided effort to give them ’ a maximum of peace?—l am,, etc.. Husband. February 20,
