(Per United Press Association.; AUCKLAND, February 21. Anthony Petrie was fined £6O and costs by Mr W. R. MTiean, S.M., for failing to make returns of his land tax. It was stated that the defendant, who had been a considerable land owner since 1925, had put the department to a lot of trouble in searching land deeds before an assessment could be made.

George I ait, of Ashburton, was charged with abetting JVlLaughlin in the commission of an offence. The evidence was to the effect that in November, 1926, Tait, uot wishing to visit Ashburton, asked M'Laughlin to sign a document relating to the marriage of the former’s son. Both pleaded guilty and were committed for trial, being released under the ‘Probation Act on their perhonal security of £SO each.
