(Per United Press Association.; AUCKLAND, February 21. Anthony Petrie was fined £6O and costs by Mr W. R. MTiean, S.M., for failing to make returns of his land tax. It was stated that the defendant, who had been a considerable land owner since 1925, had put the department to a lot of trouble in searching land deeds before an assessment could be made.
WANGANU. February 21. ' The following prisoners were setnenced by l Mr Justice Heedi—-George Mason Glenn, six months for reckless driving and negligently causing the. death of two persons: Percy Warren, nine months for causing actual bodily harm arising out of a fracas in a billiard saloon at Hunteryule; Charles Walter Ansley, 18 months for arson.
WELLINGTON, February 21, Andrew Anderson, carrier, aged 62, was fined £2O for being drunk while in charge of a lorry, with the alternative of one month’s imprisonment. George Reed, aged 41, for the tneit of two pairs of ladies' knickers from the cargo of the Tamaroa, was fined £lO, in default one month's imprisonment. ASHBURTON. February 21. ■’itit t l . l ® Magistrate’s Court Philip M Laughhn, of Hinds, was charged ivith having made a false document by signing the name of George Tait to his consent to _ the marriage of a minor. George I ait, of Ashburton, was charged with abetting JVlLaughlin in the commission of an offence. The evidence was to the effect that in November, 1926, Tait, uot wishing to visit Ashburton, asked M'Laughlin to sign a document relating to the marriage of the former’s son. Both pleaded guilty and were committed for trial, being released under the ‘Probation Act on their perhonal security of £SO each.
