HOSPITAL' BOARD REPORTS.
The following is a summary of the reports of the various committees which will be presented at the monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board on Thursday next:— The Benevolent Committee will report that during the past month 34 cases for relief have been dealt with at a weekly cost of £2O 2s. Casual cases for relief amounting to £387 0s Sd have been approved. Thirty-one applications were made for relief on account of men being out of work,* and tickets for work were granted. Four who were given tickets for work failed to respond. During the month nine persons were admitted to, four discharged from, and one death occurred at the Talboys Home. At present 140 inmates remain in the institution.
The Hospital Committee will recommend that copper pipes be now procured for substitution of the galvanised jron pipes at the Dunedin Hospital as required. The committee will report thatthe South Otago Hospital Board has intimated the acceptance of the Otago Board’s terms regarding the transfer of nurses from the Balclutha Hospital for the final six months of their training in the Dunedin Hospital. The Finance Committee will report that the board duly waited upon the Minister of Justice in regard to the maintenance of prisoners in the Dunedin Hospital, and the Minister intimated that he would recommend the department to pay for one prisoner’s maintenance, - but he was not prepared to recommend payment for the other. It was suggested that the regulations in regard to the payment of maintenance of prisoners in public hospitals should be revised. The acceptance of the tender of Messrs J. and T. Christie, Ltd., for renewing in copper the spouting and down pipers at the Prince Edward Children’s Convalescent Home has been approved.
