Her condition is very critical. It appears that Mrs Mather was look“R ( or w the shed, and struck a match, which ignited petrol leaking from the can. Hearing the screams of the victim. Miss H. M. Kent, who has the flat on the ground floor, rushed to the scene with rugs, which she dragged from a clothes line, and managed to smother the flames by rolling Mrs Mather on the grass. Mrs Mather was attended by doctors before being taken to the hospital. Her- condjtion gradually became worse, and she died at 8.30 this evening. FRACTURE OF THE SKULL. (Peb United Pbess Association.) INVERCARGILL, February 21. Through being accidentally struck on the head by a winch handle at hia work this afternoon, James Fitzpatrick, a railway _ employee, married, aged 54 years, received a compound fracture of the skull and laceration of the face. . His condition before be underwent an operation this evening was reported to be serious. TELEGRAPH MESSENGER INJURED. (Peb United Pbess Association.) ■ INVERCARGILL, February 21, Leary, telegraph, messenger, aged 16 years, experienced a . remarkable escape from serious injury to-day. He was riding a. bicycle, and had a pea-rifle slung over his back. It was accidentally discharged, the bullet entering the upper portion of Leary’s right arm. The bullet was removed later at the hospital.
