'Weighing only lib 6oz, a prematurelyborn baby, was kept alive by being fed with a fountain-pen filler and by devoted attention at the Royal Hospital. Wolverhampton. The weight at birth of a normal baby is from 71b to 81b, At the hospital a specially electrically-heated coc was provided, and the baby was Wanned m cottonwool. A sister of the hospital explained that the baby, a girl, was not bathed, butsponged with warm oil. The father brought milk every day and it was given cii * a , m J a ?t . through a fountain-pen tiller. At first it took an hour to cive her a spoonful. For the first fortnight the baby received a drop of brandy every four hours. It had to* be awakened for its meals* otherwise it might haVb slept on and starved. Under the special care and treatment the child weighed 21b Boz at the last report, and the hospital staff thought it would be roared. The parents are naturally overjoyed at the ‘miracle.” The baby is taken out of its cot, only once a day. It was in the electrically-heated cot for a month but was being accustomed to a lower temperature, though it was never moved from the fire.
The baby’s name is Ins, but tuc nurses call it “ Buttonhole,” and they were making some tiny clothes for it foi Christmas. But it is like making clothes for a doli/ remarked the sister.
