LEGISLATIVE REFORM

NEW SOOTH WALES PROPOSAL. REFERENDUM TO BE HELD. (United Press Association.) , (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, February 13. (Received Feb. 14, at 1.45 a.m.) . The State Legislative Assembly in committee to-night agreed to hold a referendum on May 3 for reform of the Legislative Council. The Labour members sought to have the referendum put off until the general election at the end of the year and thus save, a considerable sum of money. The Premier, however, was afraid that if Labour was then returned, an attempt would be made to abolish 'the Upper House altogether, as was tried some years ago by Mr Lang. In to-night’s division the voting was equal, the Government being victorious only by means of the casting vote of the chairman of committee.
