WATER SUPPLY LOAN. Thehe has been no manifestation of public interest in the proposal of the City Council to raise a loan of £44,000 for the purpose of providing an additional supply main from \he Sullivan dam and thus of preventing some of the waste of water that now occurs. It may not be entirely safe, however, to deduce from this . that there is no opposition to the loan project. There is no apparent reason for opposition to the loan, and there is every reason why provision should be made to conserve as as possible of the water which, under present conditions, is allowed to run to waste, but it would be wholly unwise to assume that there are not among the ratepayers a number of perverse individuals who are capable of resisting even a loan proposal that is not open to the stock objection that the adoption of it will entail an increase in the rates. The.ratepayers should generally recognise that, in circumstances in which a shortage of water is always possible and-indeed almost inevitable aftdr a dry spell, it is a grave mistake to permit hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to run to waste every day in wet .weather and that an expenditure of- £3300 a year, this being the total annual charge that will be consequent on the raising of the' loan, will be completely justified when the object is to prevent this serious waste. They should have little hesitation in voting for the loan at the poll which will be. taken to-day.
