AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

OTAGO CENTRE. Mr E. L. Macassey presided over a well-attended meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, held last night. A communication was received from the Canterbury Centre stating that It would be holding an evening meeting at English Park on February 15, when the Eugene Spitz Cup would be competed for. The cup was for a ladies’ 100 yards scratch race, open to any lady competitor in New Zealand. The Canterbury Centre would like the Otago Centre to be represented in the race, and thought it might be possible to send four ladies in order that a relay race could be held between the two provinces. The Canterbury Centre also wished that a men’s relay team could be sent. This, it was considered, would be a good opportunity for the inauguration of the relay between Otago and Canterbury, which was suggested last season. In the event of this taking place Canterbury would he prepared to return the visit next season. The Canterbury Centre wbuld arrange billeting for the Otago men and ladies if necessary. In the event of Otago not being able to send teams, Canterbury asked permission to pay L. C. M'Lachlan’s expenses to and from the meeting. —The Invercargill Club delegates stated that the Southland Sub-centre’s championships would be .held on February 15. —lt was decided to patronise this meeting before the Canterbury Centre’s meeting. The Canterbury Centre’s request to pay M’Lachlan’s expenses to and from Christchurch was granted.—With regard to the ladies’ part of the meeting, it was decided to communicate with Miss V. Nicol, of Gore, advising her of the Canterbury Centre’s request, in order to allow her to compete if she wished. The treasurer reported that a trophy order for £4 in favour of a cyclist had not been taken to the jeweller mentioned, but to another. The cyclist had make the alteration. The worst aspect of the affair 'was that the latter jeweller had handed over the articles selected to the cyclist without the treasurer’s haying seen them, and they were not engraved in accordance with the instructions on the order. In view of the fact that this sort of thing was becoming too frequent, the treasurer thought that on example should be made of his case. It was pointed out by delegates that there wore several cases similar to the one in question. After considerable discussion it was decided that all the orders to date be passed, hut in future none would be paid unless the goods were ordered on the firm indicated by the treasurer.

The N.Z.A.A.A. advised that its American representative was unable to secure any athletes to tour New Zealand. The association was still endeavouring to obtain a visit from Dr Peltzer.

Messrs C. W. Clark, R, Thompson, E. C. Isaacs, and E. L. Macassey were appointed track selectors of the Otago team to compete in the New Zealand championships. An application from R. V. Shields for reinstatement was sent on to the New Zealand Council, with a recommendation that it should be granted. It was decided that the secondary schools’ championship should be held at Invercargill on March 8. The treasurer (Mr R. Swinney) tendered his resignation, to take effect from February 1, as he was leaving shortly to take up residence in Christchurch. Mr Swinney has been treasurer for several years, and held the position of secretary before that.—His resignation was accepted with regret, and it was decided to hold a function on Thursday, January 30, in order to bid farewell to him. ’

It was decided to present a gold medal for competition at the Southland subcentre championships. The medal would ha for most points in championship events. The Invercargill Club’s delegate (Mr J. W. Holley) was authorised to approach Otago athletes with regard to their attending the Southland meeting. Mr J. H. Johnston reported that Mr F.
