AUCKLAND, January 20. There will be a slight reduction in the prices of bananas in the city when the shipment which arrived by the Tofua is placed on the markets. The Tofua brought 9000 cases of bananas. ' Whether these will all be available for distribution in Auckland province will depend upon the condition of the cargo which reached Wellington by the Maui Pomare on Sunday. The Maui Pomare cargo, which included 6500 cases consigned to Auckland, had showed signs of being over-ripe, and it is now considered unlikely in local fruit circles ,that any of the shipment will be sent north. It is expected that the cargo will be distributed in the South Island. The Tofua’s shipment of 9000 cases, although considerably below normal, is an improvement on that of last month. This increase, stated a prominent fruit dealer, will continue steadily through, the year until thff normal supply is again reached. Shipments of bananas from Fiji are steadily increasing, and the latest reports from the flooded areas indicate that no time has been lost in planting new crops to replace those which were lost. The outlook for the next 12 months is, therefore, an optimistic one.
